Cotto, also known as terracotta, is a porous material consisting of red clay particles. As early as the Etruscan period, cotto was manu-factured using Upper Italian clays from Siena and the area around Chianti. But terracotta, which translated means the same as baked earth has also a long tradition in Spain and France.
