Stone Care

Your high quality natural or cast stone deserves the treatment with our professional products. For the optimal treatment the following differences have to be considered:

Natural stone

In the case of natural stone, a distinction must be made between hard rock and soft rock. The hard types of rock include granite, gneiss, quartzite and porphyry. The soft types of rock include sandstone as well as limestone, e.g. marble (Thassos, Carrara, Estremoz, Palisandro, etc.), Jurassic marble, Solnhofer stone, travertine, Botticino and Trani.

Cast stone

Cast stone consists of pieces of natural stone which are bound together by means of synthetic resin or cement. Examples of cement-bound cast stones are concrete ashlar or terrazzo. Examples of resin-bound cast stones are agglomerate marble or agglomerate granite.

Sensitivity to acids

Particular natural stones consist mainly of calcium carbonate and are called limestone. Limestone, for example marble, is sensitive to acids! Cement-bound cast stones, such as concrete ashlar, are also acid-sensitive. This is the reason why wine or fruit juice must be removed from the surface of the stone immediately. We strongly advise you to avoid using acidic cleaning agents for these kinds of stone.

Treatment of stone flooring

Preliminary cleaning

Before the protective coating is applied, the stone should be thoroughly cleaned with AKEMI® Stone Cleaner. AKEMI® Stone Cleaner has extremely intensive cleaning properties. It removes light cement films, layers of stone-care products, oil and grease, soot and tar and remnants of synthetic paint as well as plaster.

Protective treatment

Most natural and cast stones can be easily stained and for this reason they need a special kind of protection. AKEMI® Stain Repellent is a special impregnation which repels water, grease and oil and has a long-term effect. In contrast to a sealed stone, it retains its ability to "breath". On account of its dirt repellent effect, it is easier to keep the surface of the stone clean. After it has hardened completely, Stain Repellent is harmless even if it comes into contact with foodstuffs. In places which are particularly exposed, Stain Repellent should be renewed once a year.
If the stone is porous or absorbent (e.g. Solnhofer stone), we recommend you to seal it with AKEMI®Stone Sealer (available in satin finish or mat finish). By sealing the stone you are closing its surface making it dirt and water repellent for a long period of time. Stone Sealer intensifies the colours and makes the structure of the stone appear more pronounced.

Regular cleaning and care

AKEMI® Mild Stone Soap is a mild cleaning agent which is used to clean all floors made of natural and cast stone. Even if it is regularly used, the structure and colour of the stone remain unchanged. The regular care of your stone flooring should include treatment with AKEMI® Stone Polish-wax based. This product is a high-quality and environmentally friendly wax emulsion (solventless!). Stone Polish-wax based brings back the lustre to the stone. We recommend the alternating application of Mild Stone Soap and Stone Polish-wax based (3x Mild Stone Soap, 1x Stone Polish-wax based).

New finishes

Dull and worn stone floors should be polished up with the aid of AKEMI® Polishing Fluid No.10 (enhances the colour of the stone) or AKEMI® Stone Polish-wax based (no colour enhancement). Afterwards, the surfaces will shine as though they were new. We recommend you use a polishing machine.

Special cleaning tasks

AKEMI® Wax-Stripper is the right product if you want to remove wax stains or thicker wax layers from your stone flooring. Wax-Stripper is also ideal if you want to remove tar, bitumen, paint and layers of stone sealer or polish. If there are oil or grease stains on your stone floor, we recommend you to use AKEMI® Oil and Grease Remover Paste. This product can also be used to remove peripheral discolourations in natural stone which have been caused by the improper application of sealants (e.g. sanitary silicone).

Treatment of tabletops, kitchen work surfaces and window sills

Protective treatment

In the course of use, tabletops and kitchen work surfaces regularly come into contact with oil and grease. For this reason, the stone should be impreg-nated with AKEMI® Stain Repellent before use. After it has hardened completely, the product is harmless even if it comes into contact with foodstuffs. As Stain Repellent has a water-repellent effect, it should also be used for treating window sills. These are exposed not only to rain but also to spilt water from the watering can.

Basic cleaning

For basic cleaning of table tops, kitchen work surfaces and window sills made of stone AKEMI® Stone Cleaner should be used.

Regular cleaning and care

AKEMI® Triple Effect is used for daily care. In one single operation three effects are achieved: deep cleaning, water and grease repellent impregnation, restoration of lustre. In case the table top should be polished to high gloss we recommend to use AKEMI® Stone Polish-silicone based. This polish brings back the lustre of the stone and conserves the natural colour.

Oil and grease stains

Oil and grease stains in the kitchen can be removed with AKEMI® Oil and Grease Remover Paste.

Treatment of stone surfaces in bathrooms

Protective treatment

In order to ensure that your washstand as well as the floor and wall tiles of natural stone in your bathroom are easy to take care of, we recommend you to impregnate them first with AKEMI® Stain Repellent. This makes the surface of the stone water-repellent which is an important factor on account of the high degree of moisture in the bathroom. Lime is no longer capable of adhering firmly to the stone and can therefore be easily wiped away from the surface. In addition, Stain Repellent has a repellent effect on grease and oil: This means that creams, body lotions and other oily cosmetics cannot penetrate the stone.

Regular cleaning and care

In the bathroom, we recommend the use of AKEMI® Disinfectant Cleaner for the regular cleaning of acid-resistant natural stones (such as granite and gneiss) as well as tiles, plastics, glass and high-grade steel. This product removes stubborn hard-water residues, rust stains, soap residues and dirt quickly and for a long time. For the cleaning of acid-sensitive limestone (such as marble), we recommend AKEMI® Mild Stone Soap. For the regular care of all stone surfaces in the bathroom, we recommend the use of AKEMI® Stone Polish-wax based.

Oil and grease stains

Oil and grease stains in the kitchen can be removed with AKEMI® Oil and Grease Remover Paste.

Treatment of terraces, garden paths and façades made of stone

Protective treatment

Terraces and garden paths should be treated with AKEMI® Stain Repellent. This special impregnation repels water, grease and oil and is also highly suitable for use outdoors. AKEMI® Colour Intensifier intensifies the natural structure and colour on rough, sawed or flamed stones. This weather-resistant impregnation produces a permanent wet effect which also resists strong solar radiation. Neutral or colourless stone surfaces are upvalued. For the impregnation of stone façades we recommend the application of AKEMI® Stone Impregnation. This product penetrates deeply into the stone and makes it water repellent but still permits it to "breathe". AKEMI® Anti-Graffiti provides façades made of clinker and brick as well as natural and cast stone with a prophylactic protection against graffiti. Painted scribblings or drawings can then be easily removed from it.

Cleaning

Terraces made of natural or cast stone which have become dirty on account of air or rain-borne pollution should be cleaned from time to time with AKEMI® Stone Cleaner. If fat has dripped onto your terrace during a barbecue we recommend you to use AKEMI® Oil and Grease Remover Paste. Unprotected enclosing walls and flagstones in the garden are continually being soiled by natural deposits. In addition, stone can be discoloured by blossoms, leaves and bird droppings. These kinds of dirt can be easily removed with AKEMI®Algae and Mildew Remover.

Removing rust

On account of the moisture in the garden, particular kinds of natural and cast stone can develop rust spots or striation. These rust occlusions can be removed with the aid of AKEMI® Rust Remover. This product transforms the rust and prevents it from rusting again for a long period of time. Only suitable for acid-resistant natural stones (such as granite and gneiss).

Treatment of gravestones

Protective treatment

On account of the shade and the damp which many cemeteries have in common, gravestones are continually being soiled by natural deposits. If they are prophylactically impregnated with AKEMI® Stain Repellent, this process can be slowed down.

Cleaning and care

If natural deposits have already accumulated on a gravestone, they can be easily removed with AKEMI® Algae and Mildew Remover. Algae and Mildew Remover also removes discolourations caused by blossoms and leaves as well as bird droppings and other stubborn forms of dirt. We recommend you to use AKEMI® Stone Polish-silicone based to conserve polished gravestones. This product conserves the natural colour of the stone and brings back its lustre.
