Fine stoneware tiles are made of compact, pigmented earthenware with very low water absorption. Their surfaces can be either glazed or unglazed. Unglazed tiles have varying surface textures: They can be polished, semi-polished or structured. In the case of semi polished and polished fine stoneware, micropores open at the surface and should be retreated. Ceramic tiles are formed out of specially prepared clay (greek keramos) mixed with mineral materials and converted into its final condition by means of firing. In addition to glazed ceramic tiles there are also unglazed ceramics such as clinker.

The unglazed surfaces of fine stoneware and ceramic tiles are in particular need of the correct cleaning, protective impregnation and care in order to preserve their natural beauty and colour.
